I. S.E.E. U. design driven Projects
These works were born from our Professional Studio course and The EPIC Project, where the faculty actively perform producer/director/advisor roles while together, with students, creating works for non-profit organizations. These projects aim to be innovative and most are field tested (including these).
This is The Diatribe (Live Action Video) (2 min. 47 sec.)
Innovation: integration of my four socio-emotional design components for the I-See-U blueprint.
As part of The EPIC Project, I served as producer and advisor for this primary promotional video for an organization called The Diatribe. I guided the students through my four components of socio-emotional design while they poured in their creativity and ambition. These are:
the primal brain, where raw emotion resides. (0:22 - 1:17).
the tribal brain, where we long for belonging (1:18 - 1:28) (2:19 - 2:43).
the knowledgable brain, where we piece together facts that we can churn into context (1:30 - 1:45) (1:58 - 2:03) (2:10 - 2:19).
our logical brain, where value propositions propagate. (1:46 - 1:57) (2:04 - 2:09)
The Harlem Hellfighters (Documentary Animation) (3 min. 32 sec.)
Innovation: integrated captions and audio descriptions, a color-blind color palette, and neurodiverse-friendly pacing.
I partnered with Susan Bonner, serving as co-producer and animation director for this and five other animations created for the Jim Crow Museum as part of The EPIC Project at KCAD. The series is called "Achieving Despite Resistance, and aimed to provide middle school visitors with an introduction to the Jim Crow era in America. The students adeptly adapted my universal animation/video process which includes:
For deaf and hard of hearing persons: organically integrated captions that eliminates the need for added and disruptive captions.
For blind and low vision persons: high contrast graphics and organically integrated voice, foley, environment, and narration that eliminates the need for added and disruptive audio descriptions.
For colorblind persons: an animated color-blind friendly palette based on an early version of my color-system.
For neurodiverse persons: moderate pacing, non-scotopic animation, and alternating timing between reading and action sequences.
